Working my way through the series again & just finished WinterFall. Something was nagging at me starting halfway through & it finally hit me. Where was Senka’s body guard during all the action? He’s bigger, meaner & older than Arkady, so would have been a good fighter to have around. Did he do something Darwinian like tuck a napkin under his chin & lick his lips when the babies showed up? Or was he back at Casa Senka polishing his sword, while his boss was busy fighting for her life on two continents? Will his punishment be harsh? Will his fate be… Florence? (gasp)(shocked muttering)
Just curious, did you slip up & now have to come up with a reason for it or was his absence part of the plan? Sorry if I added any work to your schedule. 🙂
You could even cover it in a short story in Compendium 3, to keep from having to work it into the next book.
Something like Ondreg the Giant 🙂 & Veleslava (also MIA) being tasked with checking on another Mithraic shrine south of Rome & things getting out of hand. Senka shows up after the China battle, ready to punish their lazy asses, but when she sees how broken up they are, just starts laughing.
Might be easier than interrupting the next books narrative.It’s been my experience that any time a writer says ‘wait and see’ things are already in motion… if only in the writer’s head.
So, John, not to whine or complain or anything like that, but I just re-read the entire series for the third time and dang. Do you have a timeline for when book 14 will be done? I know you’re busy with the other series, which I’m looking forward to, but I am curious. Also, I apologize if you’ve covered this elsewhere.
I’ll finish the rough draft of Zone War today. Then edits, off to editor, and more edits. After that I’ll start Demon Divine. Hoping for January or Feb.

Speaking of Winterfall & the absence of Senka’s body guard & vedmak, what was Elder Tsao & her Duelist up to during the action in China? Must have been pretty important to warrant their absence during an alien invasion of her homeland.
