ParticipantI feel the “balance” thing seems a tad unfair – as the demons keep cheating and have been winning LOADS. The world seems deivilishly (pun intended) skewed towards cruelty and selfishness. So, Chris stopping a full on demon invasions doesn’t feel like tipping the balance in goods favour all that much.
I think that’s an interpretation of things – just that baddies used to getting their own way are ramping up in a panic. And the status quo is disrupted. So, less balance and more a removal of the prior stagnation.
And yeah, going to Hell, making the demons go on the back foot… that could be a plan.

ParticipantYeah TJ used his social ineptitude as an excuse to be rude and all that.
Hope we get some more Ashleigh and a bit more screen time with the Arcane crew, minus Declan, or only having him cameo as some sort of UBER FRIEND who maybe deals with a problem the local kids can’t deal with.
Liked the view of seeing Jetta and Matthew maybe moving forward, plus the new kid who got bit in that short story. I’d like to see more of a story in pack politics. we know in depth how the Vamps do things; let’s see Brock come back to Declan in a conciliatory way, maybe eating some humble pie (I like Brock but think the Weres made a DUMB move out of pride and as a short term strategy).
Having Stacia and Declan maybe making friends with the pack on Chris’ farmland would be quite a coup as well – not joining with them but forming a good relationship.
And I’d be up for him shaking up the Faerie status quo with his own hogwarts… could be a good teaching experience for the Witches: “Here’s REAL POWER. How do you handle it?”

ParticipantUsed to be the same here – hence why RM don’t like to be called “ex” – it used to carry a bit of weight. Now, most of the Army and Navy don’t really care. Less precious about it perhaps.
Audax
ParticipantWe’re less stuffy about it over here – unless you’re a Royal Marine. They get snippy! Usually we go with “former” but “ex” doesn’t carry the derogatory meaning here as much and feels more shorthand. That said, we have less of a reverence for “Veterans” here as well, despite the Remembrance Day ceremonies.
I should use “Former”, but my former colleagues use them interchangeably.

ParticipantI’m ex military – another reason I rather like the mil-spec stuff in DA. Though when he included that Apache I laughed my arse off – those things can engage from miles away, even with the chain gun. Their whole deal is they’re ambush, anti tank predator helicopters. And they can SNIPE with that gun.
But rule of drama.
As for Ennui, yeah it’s more boredom as the work is long but relatively easy. Rote, as it were, so lacking in creativity! I don’t do the legal stuff, just supporting the Operations side, which supports the lawyers, but it does mean you have to work to their timelines a fair amount.
Managed to edit the STACIA page with some details and added some more stuff onto the Vampire page – still getting the hang of wiki editing.

ParticipantDidn’t get home until 2345 in the end – had a mad rush at work so late departure plus work functions to network at.
And we had our election results this morning so everyone is feeling rather…. ill at ease. Hoping to get home at a reasonable hour this evening and to try to log on if I can get over the ennui!

ParticipantYeah, hopefully today (11th) – can access at home now our internet provider fixed the cabling outside. AS for the filters – they seem to block website sin bulk under certain categories – mostly sites relating to jobs, but also gaming, which apparently covers certain wikis – I can access it at times but logging into the wiki is unwieldy and blocks features. Plus editing at work means I’m not working!
As for my background helping – well, it COULD give more context to the setting, as I understand it a little (Seeing as I work inside a corporate entity); more I was saying that, as the author has a background in corporate work he’s able to bring that to the forefront with his writing; he “gets” how these things work, which helps when we see Tanya’s perspective, or Darian’s (the lawyer); though my firm isn’t a criminal firm, it does more corporate stuff – so haven’t yet seen any retention of private investigators!
Will look to run through the wiki this week to see what I can chip in and help out on.

ParticipantWell there are Were folk in Fairy; just they seem purpose bred by the queens (The were tigers who seemed a little MORE than just Weres); I kind of want to see Declan set up a permanent base, beyond the jet setting.
Also, his role as a Pack Alpha with Stacia will be… interesting. As he’s a bit unorthodox and “apparently” doesn’t get involved in macho bs. Except he does; his whole demeanour is about knocking the legs out from others to show he isn’t to be messed with. Except with the NY pack when he TRIED diplomacy and they got… silly.
I can see him attracting a varied mix – he already has the loyalty of people from “his” city for saving a few of the Council. I can see him taking the ones who don’t want to align with the Wild Hunt. Think he and Stacia need more detail on their relationship, perhaps the book after Darkkin queen we can explore Steclan and their weird jet setting life, their dynamic. She loves him, but there’s this theme that the guys are clueless and don’t seem to function without the girls. And the girls only need the guys when things get dire and don’t seem to get their own comeuppance for saying things… whereas the guys get a good verbal kicking (Yeah, they deserve it at times… but turnabout, fair play!)
Holly and Delaney are the start; I think Declan taking a more leader-role with the witches globally is fairly inevitable when he starts thinking a bit more “big picture” beyond Omega. He already, apparently, has several companies that Omega runs for him. Which is why I was surprised that Stacias mum being unemployed was an issue in the Compendium – surely omega could just give her a job at one of Declan’s companies?
Also, he REALLY needs to recruit TJ to his team for the robot tech…

ParticipantWork in Resource Management for a law firm. Busy season so a few late nights and websites get restricted at work, so can only view BBC news etc most days. I love the detail Conroe has with corporate structures (His background in commercial finance can’t have hurt the knowledge!)
Hoping tomorrow will normalise and I can get on the wiki and contribute a bit more.

ParticipantVoted! i wil lbe online to edit some of the content soon – work has been kicking me from right to left and have not had internet access this weekend!

ParticipantPretty sure they can – The Book of Darkest Sorrow was written by that witch AND Declan sems to create new wasy of using magic. Spells seem to be like a simple way of automatically carrying out an action, with the same effect each time.
What Declan does seems to be more like magic manipulation on the fly, whilst the other witches rely on structured spells they can create or mold. As they explain, many use different methods – runs, magic sand etc.
There seem to be basic “rules” you can’t easily avoid – circles, channeling of power etc, but the effects change.

ParticipantTime travel could be a bit weird – or send him back so he has to make sure his past ISN’T disrupted by Vorsook maybe?
I did have a thought that maybe we get an Alternative Universe Chris – one who DID lose everyone in that ORACL bunker… and who went apocalyptic. Ends up in this universe to wreak havoc – he’s JUST Grim now, wants Tanya. And just thinks all threats to Tanya EVERYWHERE need to die – so starts a one man battle across the planet. Could be an interesting way to whip up tension between Chris and the world again – “look what happens if he goes off the deep end!!”
Of course, the counter to that is “Well, how about we don’t TRY to send him off the deep end?”
I think Chris in WW2 would be… insanely overpowered. NOTHING could scratch him, unless we find out just what the Nazis were doing in that POW camp…

ParticipantWith omega, I think Mr Conroe has actually spent some time curbing him – at first Omega was “everywhere”; but by Caeco’s book it seems he can only properly “focus” on some of the world – and doesn’t quite have all that influence over even most of the USA. He can run several parallel routines but doesn’t seem to be that imaginative or active if he isn’t as zeroed in on a situation – hence why he can’t talk when Declan gets hurt – EVERYTHING focuses on that issue.
Also he seems very poorly equipped to deal with the Vorsook AI. And they seem to have multiple versions of those – so it may be that his limit is in a stand up fight with the Vorsook.
The Vorsook seem to also have been very stupid – they have all these hidey holes on the planet – and actual Vorsook on Earth. Quite why some of those have reverted to using basic cybernetic enslavement is weird. We saw that even a small number of the Black Forest weapons were ridiculously effective. Why haven’t they tried that again now they have actual footholds or presence? The whole Nika short story would’ve ended a whole lot differently if there’d been Black Frost revenants in that base, rather than the usual MIB grunts. Same for CAECO…
But yeah, another novel with Chris (I think Tanya’s book will show more of him) and then a few split offs. Of course, Mr Conroe can only do one book at a time! We should clone him….
Audax
ParticipantI think it was a bit unfair that Stacia’s book wasn’t told first person from her POV. One of THOSE types of novels could be great fun – her own book, Rogues, segued into Declan’s book by the end. CAECO also ended up with a heavy Declan focus, but that’s to be expected considering their… history.
I think a novel with Chris as one of the narrators works, but overall I’m more comfortable with him sliding back a bit more – he’s kind of HAD his major arcs – grown as a character. The usual way to keep them interesting is by damaging that growth in some way – look at how comics resets Spiderman or Batman ALL THE TIME. Either that, or you escalate the threat stupidly.
More from his point of view, maybe of some of the other characters would be good though, especially as the Vorsook arc builds up – as they seem a fair match for him.
I’d be a fan of more Compendiums, to flesh out more characters and maybe give us Chris’ view of some of these OTHER stories being told. I for one would lvoe to see how he slammed Mr Jenks around at Arcane for the guy being an idiot!
DoctorChild – your own characters? Writing your own series perhaps?
